The main opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Friday assailed the Irfaan Ali-led administration for failing to address inequity in a number of communities, and promised to improve their conditions if it wins next month’s general and regional elections.
Outspoken People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) member and activist, Nima Flue-Bess identified Laluni and Yarrowkabra on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway as striking examples of unsatisfactory living conditions.
In the case of Laluni, which she said voted for the People’s Progressive Party Civic, “after five years still does not have a good road in their community; no road was done in Laluni.” In contrast, she said the government looked after the main road leading to lands that they could use. Ms Flue-Bess said Laluni is a farming community whose farmers were “struggling” to transport their produce out of the village.
Turning her attention to Silica City, touted to be Guyana’s first fully sustainable and technologically smart urban area, the APNU parliamentarian said while the government was neglecting nearby communities, roads and electricity were already being provided to that upscale housing development. “Laluni, which has been populated for years, still cannot have electricity. Tell me if this PPP Civic government cares,” she told the estimated 150 to 200 core attendees at a public meeting held at the Stabroek Market Square.
In January, 2025, Prime Minister Mark Phillips had met with Laluni residents and promised that Guyana Power and Light (GPL) would soon connect Laluni to the national grid.
If the PNCR-led APNU wins the September 1 general and regional elections, Ms Flue-Bess committed that the new administration would ensure that all Guyanese are treated fairly in the delivery of public goods such as roads, electricity and water supply. “When you vote APNU come September 1st, all Guyanese will enjoy equity and equal distribution of the resources of this nation,” said said.
Across at Yarrowkabra and Swan, she said potable water has to be turned off in one community for supply to reach another.
The government earlier this year had said 25 homes under the Yarrowkabra Homestead Project should have been completed by July, 2025.
