An A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)-led administration would create the conditions to end control of business opportunities by a small clique and instead allow a broad cross-section of Guyanese to compete fairly for contracts, party candidate Dr Terrence Campbell said on Friday night.
He told a public meeting at the Stabroek Market Square that an Aubrey Norton presidency would bring an end to the government’s alleged sharing of contracts and business opportunities with the private sector. “We are committed to levelling the playing field in the private sector,” he said, adding that an APNU administration would ensure that Linden, Essequibo and New Amsterdam are restored to their former glory.
“We’ll open up this country. No more, no more will there be inequality. We will allow the money to be spread, the wealth of this country that belongs to you to be spread to you,” he told the meeting whose core attendees numbered about 150 to 200 persons. The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR)-led APNU had in the past attracted significantly more persons in that area of Georgetown, its stronghold, to public meetings.
Promising that none of the 10 administrative regions would be left behind, Dr Campbell said a Norton-led government would invest heavily in the technical institutes and the Port Mourant training centre so that they could provide the technicians and other skilled workers for Guyana’s new economy. “We would ensure that fabrication for the oil industry is not only done here in Georgetown… but is done by competent technicians,” he said.
Instead of the award of small contracts for the cleaning of drains, the APNU candidate assured that if his party wins the September 1 general and regional elections, the new administration would ensure “no more gutter contracts” but proper contracts that would allow contractors to take care of their families.
