Less than one month after he allegedly opened fire and snatched GY$13.1 million from the Fantasy Game Lounge at Giftland Mall, Greater Georgetown, a security guard was arrested and the security company’s firearm was found in his possession, police said Friday.
The Guyana Police Force said Criminal Investigations Department (CID) detectives arrested Rakameem Nicholas, at KK Villa, Lime Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
“The wanted man then took the ranks to a room at KK Villa, Room 9, where a search was conducted, and the security firearm (Glock 19) that he was working with at the time of the robbery was found in a black haversack.
The firearm’s magazine contained 15 live matching rounds of ammunition. Also in the haversack was the suspect’s passport and a copy of the security firearm license for the said firearm,” police stated.
The Police Force said a cellular phone and GY$20,950 were found in his possession.
Police alleged that on June 22, 2025 the guard, who was employed by Castle Security, was armed with the security service 9mm pistol and 17 rounds. CCTV cameras at the Giftland mall captured the suspect walking out of the Giftland access road, then turning west on the Railway Embankment, and stopping a motorcar, PZZ 5690, which drove away in a western direction.
Checks were made to locate Mr Nicholas but without success. His house was searched but no cash was found. Efforts are also being made to locate the car involved. Further investigations are ongoing, police also said.
The money is the property of Sylvia Thomas.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on the date and time mentioned, Supervisor Raywat Sankar, 21, was on duty at Fantasy Game Lounge.
Police were told that Mr Sankar, exited the cashier area to assist the female floor supervisor, 27, in cleaning the gaming area since no customer was there at the time.
“The suspect, who was armed with a 9mm pistol, approached both Sankar and the floor supervisor, took out the firearm, pointed it in their direction, and then discharged a round in the air, demanding that Sankar open the electronic door to the cashier area,” police added.
The GPF also said Mr Sankar reportedly complied and Mr Nicholas then ordered him and the female supervisor into the cashier’s room and further instructed Sankar to open the vault and place all the cash into a garbage basket. The security guard then walked out of the building with the cash, police added.
Detectives who processed the scene recovered one 9mm spent shell.
