University of Guyana Vice Chancellor Professor Jacob Opadeyi Tuesday morning joined the picketing demonstration, appealing to lecturers to return to work and promising them that salaries would be increased.
He declined to comment beyond the statements on the placards. The academic and non-academic staff have been on a now almost two-week old sit-in strike to demand a 60 percent increase in salaries and fringe benefits.
He was flanked by representatives of the University of Guyana Students Society (UGSS) and the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) with their own demands.
Opadeyi’s picket was held on the UG Main Road just off the turn from the Railway Embankment.
The other students and aggrieved staff members continued their protest in front of the main gate where they prevented persons from entering the compound.
The Vice Chancellor has called for salary increases to be pegged to workload performance because latest statistics from a Human Resource audit show that staff teach few hours and do not conduct any researh.
