Police on Saturday said they contacted several persons in connection with explosions that damaged a police outpost and a nearby Guyana Power and Light (GPL) substation in Georgetown.

“Several persons of interest have been contacted…These individuals are actively working with investigators as the probe continues to gain momentum, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said in a statement.

The first explosion at 1 am ripped off the back gate and damaged the wall at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost at Vlissengen Square and East Front Road.

“A police rank on duty at the time heard two distinct blasts followed by debris impacting nearby rooftops,” the force said.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Deputy Police Commissioner Wendell Blanhum said an improvised device was lobbed at the police outpost.

Police said they retrieved, from the scene, a “quantity of bolts and nuts, along with debris of a shattered hard plastic container.”

A credible person said he heard a very loud explosion at 12:56 Saturday morning that shook buildings in South Ruimveldt and lower East Bank Demerara.

Police said the second site under investigation is the GPL substation along Mandela Avenue, which also experienced suspicious damage around the same timeframe.

Authorities are examining the possibility of a coordinated effort between both incidents.

“Eyewitnesses in the area have provided valuable accounts, and forensic teams are actively analysing all available evidence.

The individuals contacted by police remain key to understanding the full scope of the events,” the GPF added.
