Police officers at the Kurupukari checkpoint have just intercepted three underage girls in what is suspected to be a case of human trafficking, the Ministry of Home Affairs said Sunday.
The ministry said two trucks were detained, and four persons, including two drivers and two porters, have been taken into custody as investigations continue.
The United States (US) State Department said in its 2024 Trafficking In Persons report that the Guyana government “fully meets the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking.”
“The government continued to demonstrate serious and sustained efforts during the reporting period; therefore Guyana remained on Tier 1. These efforts included increasing investigations and prosecutions; convicting one trafficker and ordering her to pay restitution; and enacting a new anti-trafficking law with increased penalties,” the State Department said.
