The 17-year-old son of former Local Government Minister, Kellawan Lall died in a road accident after he fell off a speeding motorcycle and was rolled over by a car, police said Monday.

The deceased, Ronaldo Lall, of Third Street, Cummings Lodge, Greater Georgetown, was a pillion rider.

The accident occurred last Friday on the Eccles Public Road, East Bank Demerara, at about 6:05 p.m. when the speeding motorcycle struck the median. Police said the rider, 17-year-old Sean Bourne of Lusignan Grass Field, East Coast Demerara, sustained fractured ribs and abrasions. His condition is listed as critical, police said.

Police said the motorcycle was travelling at a fast rate in a ‘zig-zag’ manner in and out of lanes overtaking vehicles.

As Mr Bourne overtook a motorcar (PAJ 7247), driven by a police constable, 20, which was proceeding north along the eastern lane of the road, the motorcyclist collided with the concrete median that separates the eastern and western carriageways of Eccles Public Road.

As a result, Bourne reportedly lost control of the motorcycle and he, along with Lall, fell onto the road surface in front of the car. “The driver of the motorcar, upon seeing this, applied brakes to avoid a collision with them but due to the short distance, he unavoidably drove over both the driver and pillion rider, causing them to receive injuries about their bodies,” police said.

The constable has since been detained for questioning.

Both Bourne and Lall were picked up in a conscious state by the driver of the car and public-spirited persons and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Center. They were both seen and examined by a doctor and Sean Bourne was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was further seen and admitted due to his “critical” state.

Police also said that Lall was transported by ambulance to the Woodlands Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor there.
