High-level anti-Ebola talks in Guyana

Last Updated on Friday, 24 October 2014, 21:29 by GxMedia

Guyana’s President Donald Ramotar was Friday afternoon meeting with stakeholders in the hope of arriving at a broad-based national consensus on warding off  and tackling the Ebola Virus should it arrive.

The talks came just hours after the main opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) had flayed government for not doing enough to deal with the virus. His meeting with stakeholders came less than one week after he publicly called on the political opposition to join government in crafting a national plan to deal with the virus.

APNU wants the government to seal off all illegal routes or  backtracks with neighbouring Brazil, Suriname and Venezuela and tighten surveillance at legal ports  of entry.

From all accounts, APNU intends to make a case for comprehensive and coordinated plan to deal with the disease that has killed thousands in West African countries and has now reached New York.

That opposition party pledged to vote for any amount of money in the National Assembly for an aggressive public education and awareness programme as well as improved laboratory, case management, contact-tracing and safe burials.
