Mother, son accused of bribing US embassy official for visa

Last Updated on Tuesday, 14 October 2014, 20:43 by GxMedia

Parmesh Parmanand
A mother and her son were Monday arraigned for allegedly bribing an employee of the United States (US) embassy for a tourist visa.

Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted Bibi Parmanand, 49,  and her 19-year old son Parmesh Parmanand GUY$100,000 bail each after they pleaded not guilty to the charge.

They were ordered to return to court on October 24.

While Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant did not object to bail, he successfully persuaded the Chief Magistrate to attach conditions to their pre-trial liberty.

The mother of three and her son, who is a labourer, have to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters every fortnight on Fridays until the end of the trial.

Police accuse the Parmanands of 6 Adelphi Street, Block 2, East Canje Berbice of conspiring with persons to bribe an American embassy employee to obtain a non-immigrant visitor’s visa for Parmesh Parmanand at 10 Duke and Young Streets, Kingston, Georgetown.

Defence lawyer, Clyde Forde’s bail application was made on the grounds that the Parmanands were not previously convicted or have any pending matters before the court.
