Last Updated on Thursday, 24 July 2014, 21:24 by GxMedia

Chandrada Rampersaud
Five persons were Thursday handed lengthy jail terms for robberies committed at the Bel Air Gardens home of city businessman, Malcolm Panday, three years ago.

The five- including Panday’s mother-in-law Chadradha Rampersaud- were sentenced to four years each on two counts of robbery under arms but they will only serve four years because they sentences will run concurrently. The others are Jermaine Mitchell, Aubrey Simon and Rayon Jones and Hardat Kumar.

Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, however, sentenced Mitchell  to four years imprisonment each for robbery under arms and unlawful possession of one 9 MM pistol with 9 matching live rounds.  Those sentences will run consecutively so he will be incarcerated for eight years.

They were convicted on Wednesday for the gun-point robbery of Annie Ramsood on July 12, 2011 at her Bel Air Gardens residence. They carted off GUY$1.4 M and US$29,000 with a total value of GUY$7.2 million.

The second armed robbery charge states that on the same date and location they, armed with a gun, robbed Ramsood of one Blackberry cellular phone and GUY$427,000 cash.

Seemangal pleaded guilty on September 1, 2012 and was sentenced to imprisonment for eight years. Mitchell was also convicted for being in unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
