Guyanese and Surinamese police are searching for a woman named Bibi Khan who allegedly stole a nine- day old baby from her mother, Chief of Criminal Investigations, Senior Superintendent Leslie James said Sunday.

He said shortly after the incident was reported, police had received word that a woman fitting Khan’s description was seen leaving Guyana for Suriname with a baby.

James said the Guyana Police Force would seek formal help from its Surinamese counterpart if there is no breakthrough in the case through informal contact between police from both sides of the bordering Corentyne River. “It seems that the mother was befriended by someone who introduced herself as Bibi Khan,”  he said.

The baby’s mother 22-year old Sandra “Pinky” Mc Lean said that while she was admitted at the Skeldon Hospital, the woman had gone there and admired the baby.

She said the woman eventually went to her home and hurriedly told her that they must go to Port Mourant Market to shop items for the Nine-Day observance.

Mc Lean said the woman insisted on keeping the baby while she went to the fish market, under the pretext that the scent would be unwholesome for the baby.

When the mother handed over the baby, went shopping and return the woman had already vanished with the baby boy who was born on May 16, 2014.
