Miner bailed on charges of wounding, stealing police radio

A miner accused of stealing a police communications radio and chopping a man was Wednesday granted GUY$250,000 bail.

When Ruel Chapman of 24 Guyhoc Park, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police said that on Sunday, May 11 he stole one radio communication set valued GUY$160,000, property of the Guyana Police Force.

He is also charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Caleb Caesar on March 17,2014 at Station Street, Kitty, Georgetown.

The prosecution’s objections on the basis of the seriousness of the offences were overruled and Chapman was granted bail for the alleged larceny and GUY$75,000 for the alleged wounding.

Chapman was told to return to court on June 2.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, said when detectives turned up to arrest a man, they were attacked by four men and during a scuffle one of the policemen misplaced his radio set. Acting on information, Chapman was detained and he led the police to a drain next to El Latino Bar, Hadfield and Lime Streets where the radio set was found.

The prosecutor also told the court that Chapman allegedly chopped Caesar to his abdomen and neck while he was walking on Station Street. Caesar was rushed to a nearby hospital.

For his part, Chapman told the Court that he was in a taxi on that night when the driver told him what had transpired. He conceded leading to the police to where the radio communications set was found but said the taxi driver told him that someone had kicked the device in a drain. Chapman recalled being arrested when he took the police to the area and the set was found.
