A 15 year old boy, suspected to have been involved in a robbery, was shot in his mouth and a policeman has been since placed under close arrest in connection with that incident.“The incident occurred during the response to a report of robbery with aggravation committed on a relative of the rank earlier in the evening,” a Guyana Police Force spokesman said in a statement.
The injured boy has been identified as a Alex Griffith of East La Penitence Squatting Area, Georgetown.
Police said they were probing he circumstances surrounding the incident that occurred about 8:55 PM Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, the youth arm of the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR)- the Guyana Youth and Student Movement (GYSM)- expressed grave concern about the incident and urged Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud to take firm action against the policeman.
“The GYSM hereby issues a firm call on the Police commissioner ag Mr. Seelall Persaud to take immediate administrative actions against this clearly delinquent rank due to his malicious action that resulted in the wounding of this young teen.
This gruesome action should not be allowed to continue to fester in the ranks of the police force and swept under the table as previous incidents have especially in the light of Mr. Persaud embarking on fostering a good relationship with the people,” the youth arm added.
The GYSM said it learnt that the teen was at home with his mother policemen went knocking. On answering, his mother was told by the ranks that her son may have witnessed a robbery and as such the police wanted to question him. In response the lad responded in the negative: “I don’t know anything about and robbery”.
The GYSM said the ranks then proceeded to accost the unarmed teen and placed him aback of the police van. As the van proceeded a single gunshot was heard to have been discharged and it was at that point that young Griffith was maliciously shot in his mouth.
The GYSM said that after seeking treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) the young man related the ordeal to his mother, whom he told, “one of the police put his gun in meh mouth and shoot me”.
