Residents on the West Bank and parts of West Coast Demerara were Sunday morning plunged into what will almost certainly be several hours of blackout after a car crashed into a utility pole and downed several others. The incident occurred shortly before 10 AM.
No one in the car was injured.
Residents alleged that the driver had hit another car and was fleeing when he lost control and hit the pole.
A transformer as well as high voltage and low voltage wires were on the ground.
Meanwhile, power was restored to several areas of Georgetown late Sunday morning.
The Guyana Power and Light Inc. did not issue any statement about the cause of the blackout.
Usually, press statements on blackouts are issued almost one day after the occurrence rather than at the time of outage to keep anxious consumers informed.
