Appearing before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry were Benjamin Isaiah Carrington,27, a vendor of Kingston, Jamaica and Tamara Nicola Douglas,31, a hairdresser of Silverstone, Portland, Jamaica.
They denied the charges and were remanded to prison until May 28 when they will reappear in court.
Narcotics Police said on April 21 at the airport, Isaiah had 15 kilogrames, 454 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and on the same day Douglas had in her possession 12 kilogrammes, 272 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
The prosecution’s facts are that Isaiah and Douglas arrived in Guyana aboard Fly Jamaica OJ152 and a search of their baggage revealed that they were allegedly carrying the marijuana in transparent plastic bags.
Their defence lawyer, Madan Kissoon failed in his bid to secure reasonable bail after Police Prosecutor Michael Grant opposed their pre-trial liberty, citing the nature and gravity of the offence.
Grant said the Jamaicans admitted owning the baggage and that they had packed them themselves.
