Ex CANU officer on gun,ammo charge

A former agent of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) was Friday arraigned on charges of being in illegal possession of arms and ammunition.

Now a businessman, Roberto Osborne pleaded not guilty to the charges that he was in possession of one semi-automatic Smith and Wesson pistol and 11 matching rounds on April 9.

Osborne of 117 Third Street, Alberttown was refused bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry because no special reason was given. He has been remanded to prison until his next court appearance on April 28.

Police Prosecutor Michael Grant said the man had allegedly thrown the gun and ammo in a nearby trench. Police, who had seen the acused acting suspiciously, allegedly retrieved the weapon and rounds from the waterway.

Defence Lawyer, Gordon Gilhuys said his client was never in possession of the gun and ammunition. At the time, he said, his client was there playing dominoes. Gilhuys said there were several witnesses to support his claim.

Osborne left CANU about two years ago.
