A man who was charged with being in possession of five grammes of marijuana but decided to escape from a police station was Tuesday granted bail on the drug charge but he would remain behind bars.That is because he has been refused bail on the charge of escape from lawful custody.
Police said Ignatius Carvalho committed the offences on March 11. But the accused man denied the charges.
The court, presided over by City Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty, was told that a mobile police patrol arrested the man for alleged possession of the marijuana and took him to the Ruimveldt Police Station.
Although the man was handcuffed to a bench rail at the police station, he freed himself an fled.
He was arrested four days later on March 15. He apologised, saying that he was afraid after he was arrested for the first offence.
On Saturday, March 15, again ranks on mobile patrol saw Caravio on Regent Street, also in the city and arrested him.
The defendant apologized for committed the offence, but explained that he was afraid after being arrested for the first offence.
The prosecution objected to bail, saying that Carvalho was a flight risk.
