A businessman, who claimed that a drug store owner gave him a package that included marijuana and tablets, was Tuesday granted GUY$40,000 bail on a charge of possession of narcotics.
He is Ronald James of 55 Albouys Street, Albouystown, Georgetown. He told the court that he was unaware that the 10 grammes of marijuana had been among the items. Police arrested the man on March 21 at Georgetown.
Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry entered a not guilty plea after hearing the account by the accused man. He said he had been unaware of the illegal substance since his “boss man” ,who owns a drug store, had asked him to take a bag from the interior to Georgetown.
James said he was told that the bag had contained cologne, deodorant, tablets and other items but he was never aware that the narcotic was in the tablets.
Defence Lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat asked the court for reasonable bail. He told the court that James is a businessman.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant did not oppose the bail application. The case was transferred to Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty’s court for a report and fixture on April 28.
