Soldier drowns at New River

A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldier has drowned at the New River area, according to the force.

A GDF release on Sunday stated that 21066 Private Dellon Nero died by drowning around 6.25 PM on Saturday at the army location in the area. His home address was 1056 Cummings Park, South Cummings Lodge.

Demerara Waves was told that the 24-year old  man and another soldier were not on official duty when a boat they were in capsized.His colleague swam to safety but by the time he could have sought assistance Nero had already disappeared. 

Sources said Nero’s body was recovered early Sunday morning and was due to be  be flown to the city later in the day.

A team of investigators from the Force and the police was also flown in to the location Sunday morning.
