Three Muneshwers Limited clerks on embezzlement charges

Three clerks of Muneshwers Limited women appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Friday to answer separate embezzlement charges at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.

Subrina Rahamat of Lot 2887 Well Road North Ruimveldt, pleaded not guilty to three counts of embezzlement, particulars of which said that, being employed as a clerk at Muneshwers Limited, she embezzled the sum of GUY$223,972 between January 13 and July 1, 2013 at Georgetown.
    
Bibi Twahida Ali and Bibi Shiroon Ali-two sisters who reside at Industry East Coast Demerara-also pleaded not guilty to three separate counts of embezzlement.

Particulars of the charge said that being employed as a clerk at Muneshwers Limited, Bibi Twahida embezzled the sum of GUY$218,700 between April 1 and 28, 2013, at Georgetown.

It is also alleged that Bibi Shiroon, being employed as a clerk at Muneshwers Limited,embezzled the sum of GUY$188,126 between April 22 and October 4, 2013 at Georgetown.
 
The trio was represented by attorney-at-law Mr. Nigel Hughes who requested that his clients be granted bail. He informed the court that they were placed on GUY$100,000, station bail each since October and have been reporting to CID Headquarters, Eve Leary.

Prosecutor Mangru objected to bail, stating that investigations are ongoing and the defendants are likely to receive more charges. He noted that they together allegedly embezzled in excess of $50M.

He said the defendants were back dating receipts and some of the dates were on holiday, which the accountant observed.

However, GUY$150,000 bail was granted to each defendant until, February 21.
