Heavy rainfall forces closure of several schools

The Ministry of Education has announced that  12 schools in Georgetown and one in Region Three will remain closed on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 as a result of severe rainfall which has caused flooding of their compounds.

The schools to remain closed are as follows:

Georgetown

1. Tutorial High

2. East Ruimveldt Secondary

3. The Bishops’ High

4. Queenstown Secondary

5. St. Rose’s High

6. St. Ambrose Primary

7. St. Gabriel’s Primary

8. St. Agnes Primary

9. Comenius Primary

10. St. Sidwell’s Primary

11. South Road Nursery

12. Happy Hearts Nursery

Region # 3

Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary

The Ministry of Education said it was monitoring the situation, and will provide further information about the state of the schools as additional information is received.

The Ministry will alert parents, teachers and students as to when sessions can be resumed at these schools.

Weather forecasters said rainfall records for the past 24 hours, measured at 8 AM January 15 showed that the highest rainfall of  84.4 mm was recorded at Georgetown in Region 4.

The latest weather update states that partly cloudy to cloudy skies are expected over all regions with light to moderate showers are expected Tuesday night. Rainfall is expected to range between 15.0 mm and 30.0 mm over Regions One and Two and 10.0 mm to 20.0 mm elsewhere.

For Wednesday, cloudy to overcast skies are expected with moderate to heavy showers and light intermittent rain over Regions One to Five. Other regions can expect mostly cloudy skies with moderate showers. Thundershowers are likely over some coastal areas.  Rainfall on Wednesday is expected to range between 20.0 mm and 60.0 mm over Regions One to Five. The highest is expected over Regions Two, Three and Four. Other regions can expect rainfall values between 5.0 mm and 20.0 mm.
