A wooden house at Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara was early Tuesday morning destroyed by fire, leaving a couple and their nine children homeless.

The cause of the blaze at Murphy Dam/ Saw Pit Road was not immediately known. The damage is estimated at GUY$10 million.

The homeless are Harry, his wife Shanti and their nine children- the eldest being 17 years old and the youngest two years.

A senior officer of the Guyana Fire Service said the response by fire fighters was hampered by heavy traffic on the Demerara Harbour Bridge. The official said the tenders from Georgetown took about 30 minutes to cross the east-west link. The Fire Service received a call about 7:20 AM.

Villagers and fire fighters who live in the area formed a bucket brigade and extinguished the fire.

The official said that was compounded by the fact that GuySuco’s land rover tenders at Wales Estate are being serviced.

Investigators were up to mid morning still at the scene to determine the cause of the blaze. However, one person familiar with the fire said it was of electrical origin.
