Update: Demerara Harbour Bridge resumes operations

The Demerara Harbour Bridge resumed operations shortly before 9 O’clock Sunday morning after a vessel slammed into it forcing its closure for several hours, a bridge official said.

The incident occurred shortly after 5 AM. Repairs were completed well ahead of the scheduled resumption which was tentatively put at 11 AM.

An official confirmed that due to the incident, the retractor span could not have been closed.

That means that the passage through which ships and trawlers pass remained opened and so prevented vehicular traffic from cross the bridge.

Hundreds of persons were forced to use speedboats from Vreed-en-Hoop to Georgetown.

This latest incident occurred at a time when government is considering offers to build a new bridge across the Demerara River at one of a number of other locations that have been identified.
