Chief Librarian, biker die in separate accidents

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:00 by GxMedia

The Chief Librarian of the Guyana National Library, Gillian Thompson on Tuesday- Christmas Eve- died in a vehicular accident on Church Street and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, eyewitnesses said.

The accident apparently occurred while police was chasing a white car that slammed into the National Library bus before ending up in the Church Street Canal. The bus slammed into the western bridge rail of Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.

She sustained severe head injuries and was trapped between the bridge rail and the bus.

The Ministry of Education expresssed sincere condolences to the family, friends and staff of the National Library, on the passing of Thompson. Gillian worked at the National Library for just over two decades, beginning on November 1, 1991. In 2004 she became the Chief Librarian and worked tirelessly until her untimely passing on December 24, 2013. The Ministry praised her dedication and quality of work.

“A consummate professional who dedicated her time, energy, and professional training in library science towards the advancement of reading in Guyana, Gillian would be dearly missed not only by her family, but by her colleagues and friends at the National Library and those from within education fraternity,” said the Education Ministry in a statement.

Earlier Tuesday, a biker was killed on the Essequibo Coast road after he slammed into a car that was heading in the same direction, police said.essequibo biker

He has been identified as 36-year old Navindra “Chinkie” Narine of Sparta Village, Essequibo Coast.

Police said the accident occurred about 10:30 AM when Narine attempted to overtake a car on a turn at La Belle Alliance Public Road.

The bike hit the right side door and instantly turned into a piece of mangled metal and rubber. The car ended up in a nearby canal.

Narine was rushed to the Suddie Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
