Bandits grab Public Works Ministry’s payroll

Two gunmen Thursday afternoon grabbed na GUY$8 million payroll belonging to the Public Works Ministry shortly after the clerk and the accompanying security guard arrived to pay casual workers.

Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn said two bandits, armed with guns, assaulted the clerk and took away the security guard’s gun as well as the money.

The incident occurred shortly after noon.

Asked why the Ministry opted to move such a large amount of cash at a time when government itself was stressing the need for more cheque and card transactions, Benn said the money withdrawn was to pay lower-level short-term workers who would not normally have other types of arrangements.
