One of three fishermen allegedly who allegedly faked a report of a piracy attack near the mouth of the Pomeroon River has been arrested.
“Investigations by the police revealed that the report was false and that the crew members had hidden the articles with the intention of selling them and had reported the robbery to cover their actions,” police said in a statement.
Police said the captain and two other men reported on Saturday at the Charity Police Station that they had been attacked and robbed by three armed men on Friday November 22, 2013, while fishing in the vicinity of the mouth of the Pomeroon River.
According to police force spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker the men reported that three men armed with a handgun and two cutlasses had approached their boat in another vessel, and held them up and took away a lighting plant and their 40 hp outboard motor engine and escaped.
Investigators, the spokesman said, recovered the outboard engine on Thursday among some bushes in the vicinity of the mouth of the Pomeroon River.
One of the men has been arrested so far and is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
