GECOM Commissioner robbed

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:00 by GxMedia

Elections Commissioner Antharam Mangar
Commissioner of the Guyana Elections Commission Antharam Mangar was Tuesday night robbed and assaulted as he was about to enter his yard.

Sources close to Mangar said he was robbed of GUY$50,000, US$200, diamond and gold jewellery and one Blackberry cellular phone. He was also gun butted to his lower left eye. The Commissioner was attacked outside his Section M Campbelville home shortly after parking his car about 7 PM.

Mangar discharged several rounds at the perpetrators buit it was not immediately clear whether any of them was hit.

His discharge of rounds came one day after Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee stirred national debate on whether Guyana’s gun laws should be reviewed and renewal of gun permits should be automatic.

Mangar, who was sworn in as a GECOM Commissioner on October 21, refused to speak with Demerara Waves and called away his father, well-known educator Tota Mangar.
