A man who allegedly attempted to rob a couple was shot during an exchange of gunfire with a plain clothes policeman.
He has been identified as 20-year old Jamal Cromwell of Tucville, Georgetown.
Cromwell was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after he turned up there four hours after the shootout with a gunshot injury.
“At about 2030h (8:30 PM) the suspect went to the GPHC for treatment to a gunshot injury to a finger on his left hand. The police were informed and he is under guard at the hospital,” said police spokesman Ivelaw Whittaker.
Police recounted that about 6:30 PM Saturday, a plain clothes policeman observed a man walking behind a couple in the vicinity of Anira and Irving Streets, Queenstown.
Whittaker said the policeman, suspecting that a robbery was about to take place, intervened and challenged the suspicious character who pulled out a firearm and opened fire on the policeman.
The policeman returned fire but the suspect managed to escape on a motor cycle driven by a waiting accomplice, said Whittaker.
