Retired City Policeman charged with attempted murder of ex girlfriend

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:00 by GxMedia

A retired member of the Georgetown City Constabulary who slashed his ex girlfriend’s throat and stabbed her outside a church was Tuesday charged with attempted murder.

Godfrey Lammy of 5 Laing Avenue, Georgetown was not required to plea to the charge.’

The prosecution’s case is that he attempted to murder 42-year old Denise Hope on Wellington Street, Georgetown on Saturday, October 26. She is a vendor on Regent and Wellington Streets and he is a taxi driver who operates mainly outside Acme Photo Studio on Regent and King Streets.

Police Prosecutor Mangru told the court that Lammy went up to Hopeand stabbed her to her neck and back. He objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of such offences.

Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry refused Lammy bail and remanded him to prison until November 14.

The magistrate also granted a restraining order for the alleged attacker to stay away from Hope.

The woman is still hospitalised.

At the time of the incident, Hope had just exited the Universal Church (formerly Strand Cinema), Wellington and Charlotte Streets when she was stabbed.

Lammy was several hours later arrested at Sister’s Village, West Coast Demerara and taken to Georgetown where he was questioned and charged after the woman was well enough to give investigators a statement.
