IPhone tracker helps police arrest suspected bandit

Last Updated on Sunday, 20 November 2016, 17:46 by Denis Chabrol

A tracking device in a stolen IPhone has led police to the arrest of a deportee who allegedly stole two phones and cash from two Bangladeshis as they were about to enter their West Bank Demerara home, the law enforcement agency said.

“The IPhone which has a tracking device, led investigators to the home of the suspect who was promptly arrested and taken into custody, together with his white Premio motor car, which is suspected to have been used during the commission of the crime,” police said in a statement.

The detainee is a 55-year old man who served a lengthy prison term in the United States for manslaughter and drug trafficking.

The Guyana Police Force said he was arrested shortly after noon Sunday at his North East La Penitence home with a stolen IPhone.

Police said that at about 8:45 Saturday night the Bangladeshis were about to enter their Barclay Street, Goed Fortuin home, when two males, both armed with handguns, pounced and relieved them of one Samsung phone, an IPhone and GYD$185,000 and escaped in a motor car which was parked a short distance away.
