The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) has decided to hold its next congress before year-end, the party’s General Secretary, Clement Rohee announced Monday.
He said that decision to hold the congress during the last quarter of 2016 was taken at last Friday’s Central Committee. Rohee said the focus of the Congress would be on regaining political power.
“At this congress now that we are in the opposition a new perspective will be developed. Now that we are in opposition, we would like to regain political power,” Rohee said. This would be the first time in more than 20 years that the PPP would be holding a Congress while it is in opposition.
The General Secretary said the PPP would now establish a Congress Committee that would be responsible for the agenda and other plans.
Other issues discussed as part of the General Secretary’s Report were the international and domestic economic situation, the political situation. Specific mention was made about alleged witch-hunting against PPP leaders and officials perceived as being sympathetic to that party.
The PPP , which is more than 50 years , says it’s biggest challenges at the time of this congress include electoral reforms for electronic voting, re-tabulation of votes cast and the need for a new voters list. ” We want certain reforms at gecom itself which is manifested in the ongoing picketing,” said Rohee.
