General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Clement Rohee on Monday fought viciously to dispel reports of a heated quarrel in the hierarchy of the PPP over the Party’s congress and the selection of its Presidential Candidate for the 2020 General and Regional elections.

At a press conference on Monday, the General Secretary labeled a report in the Stabroek News on Monday May 9 as pure conjecture and far from what is actually the truth.

Rohee said the Party is experiencing ongoing debates on the issue and “if this is what the Stabroek News interprets as infighting then they cannot be held when they choose to stay in their own echo chamber believing that they have lashed on to something when in fact it is sheer gossip, conjecture and rumors.”

In the report carried by Stabroek News a source was accredited with providing information that the Party was split among the possibilities for it’s Presidential candidate.

The persons floated for the post included Former President and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, Rohee, Irfaan Ali and Dr Frank Anthony.

“The PPP remains strong and united as ever,” Rohee declared in response to the report.’

He was questioned whether he was interested in the Presidency but refused to answer saying “I will stick to what was said in the statement.”

The response was the same when Rohee was further probed and asked whether he would be willing to accept the post if nominated.

He also deferred questions on whether Jagdeo, who is seen as a vote getter for the PPP, would be the best option for the Party.

Jagdeo a two time President was recently cleared to run for a third term in Office after a court case nulled an amendment made to Guyana’s constitution.

Rohee accused the media of behaving “like a stray dog; going by the smell of things and rummaging the PPP neighbourhood for new or old juicy inaccuracies and speculations.”
