A fire Saturday night gutted a three storey concrete building on Croal Street, Stabroek Market square between KFC and Pizza Hut.
Armed with several fire tenders, including a hydraulic platform, firefighters contained the blaze to the building that housed a Chinese clothing store. A fire tender from Banks DIH also helped to quell the blaze that was being fanned by a moderate north-east wind.
Badly affected were several street vendors who sell grocery, wheaten flour products, drinks and phone top-up and MMG. Most of the stalls were either burnt or otherwise severely damaged as firefighters battled the blaze.

Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldiers, with assault rifles, assisted in cordoning off a section of American Street behind the fire-affected building. About 30 minutes later, heavily armed police arrived on the scene and were quickly deployed to potential trouble spots near the fire scene.
KFC, immediately west of the fire, and the colonial-era wooden building where a Pizza Hut branch is located, were not visibly burnt by the raging inferno.
Acting Chief Fire Officer Dwayne Scotland told reporters that the Guyana Fire Service received a call at about 8:25 PM and responded with three vehicles to combat the blaze. “As of now, I would say my firefighters did a very good job and we’ll continue to fight fire the best way we can,” he said.
