Prominent businessman charged with assaulting police

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:01 by GxMedia

Paul Singh
An executive of Japarts and another man were Monday arraigned on charges of assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour.

Paul Singh,38, of Croal Street, Georgetown pleaded innocent to the charges and was granted bail of GUY$10,000 bail on each charge.

Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman ordered that the accused return to court on July 5.

He is accused of assaulting Traffic Officer Sgt. Alexis Webster. She appeared in court with her left hand bandaged due to a torn ligament.

The incident allegedly occurred on June 16 on Station Street and Vlissengen Road, Kitty.

Singh was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Basil Williams who said that his client was at a religious event in Kitty at the time of the alleged incident.

He said that Singh responded to an argument between a friend of his and a group of persons and attempted to intervene. The police was summoned and his client was arrested, he said.

The police prosecution’s account differed. He told the court that Singh had parked his vehicle on a bridge, a move that resulted in an altercation.
