Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman has revealed that all of Guyana’s productive forest areas was “shared out” under the former People’s Progressive Party/Civic administration.
Productive forest has been defined as forestland capable of producing forest products of at least 20 cubic feet per acre per year.
Trotman made the revelation while delivering his contribution to the Budget 2016 in the National Assembly on Thursday evening.
“All 100% of productive forest was shared out prior to us assuming government,” Trotman said while displaying a document to the House.
The Minister stated that the situation is “unimaginable and he cannot come to grips with how the PPP/C administration could have allowed such to happen.
“How can a responsible government” preside over such, Trotman questioned adding that the situation presents a “threat” to Guyana’s development.
Trotman also opined that the situation affects national patrimony and does not cater for future generations.
“This government will have to do and will be doing something about it,” the Minister declared.
