If the Board of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has its way, there will be a major shake-up at that autonomous regulatory agency.Demerara Waves Online News was reliably informed by usually reliable sources that the GGMC’s Board last Thursday decided to express no-confidence in the entity’s Commissioner, Ricky Vieria and at least three Technical Managers.
When checks were made, Demerara Waves Online News was told that the four top officials were expected to be given a hearing and told to show cause why no action should be taken against then. This sources said no one was fired but one option that was being explored was the transfer of three of the Technical Managers to the Mining School.
Sources said the board decided to discuss the performance of the four persons based on instructions from the government. “There are a lot of questions about some things that were done. They seem to have some evidence,” said one of the sources.
Demerara Waves Online News was told that the Board expressed concern about the dereliction of duties including the alleged failure to ensure that there are safe mining practices.
Concerns about unsafe mining practices, which had led to more than 15 deaths in one year, by the almost eight month old coalition administration had led to an Inquiry by a panel of persons.
