Third person charged with armed robbery of America Street money changers

A third person was Thursday arraigned for allegedly ambushing and robbing several money changers on America Street, Georgetown earlier this month.

Thirty-four year old Calvin Johnson of 154 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown was charged with robbing Rayburn Fraser and Osafo Warde at gunpoint on November 3, 2015.

Johnson allegedly snatched GYD$520,000, US$3,000, TT$2,000 and SRD$2,000-  from Fraser and GYD$400,000 and US$700 from Warde.

He was refused bail on armed robbery charges and remanded to prison until December 1, 2015.

Johnson was charged after he was picked up and identified by the victims as one of the perpetrators. Johnson, who was not represented by a lawyer, denied that he was in the company of the Abrams and Primo and that he merely surrendered to police after he learned that he was wanted in connection with investigations into a robbery.

Police Prosecutor, Corporal Kerry Bostwick said that about 7:30 PM, November 3, 2015, Johnson and other persons arrived on motorcycles and robbed the money changers.

The Prosecutor told the court that Johnson admitted that he had been in the company of two other  accomplices- Troy Abrams and Anthony Primo- who are due to return to court on December 11, 2015.

Police have said that at least 10 persons swooped down on America Street, firing off assault rifles and a handgun during the robbery.
