“Crime not spiraling out of control” – Crime Chief

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum has affirmed that crime is not spiraling out of control, but is in fact projected to decrease.

Blanhum made the disclosure at a presentation on Friday morning where the police force is currently revealing its plans to prevent crime in the festive season.

According to the Crime Chief, since he took Office in June, crime has seen some increase but nothing that indicates it is spiraling out of control.

He compared this period to similar periods in 2006 and 2011, after General and Regional Elections.

The data presented shows that crime has decreased in comparison to the period in 2006, and for 2011 it differs by some amount.

The figures provided by the Crime Chief indicate that in 2006 there was a total of 3834 serious crimes, 2011 saw 3121 serious crimes and 2015 recorded 3357 instances if serious crimes.

In the years following the elections, there would have been fluctuations in crime with 2007 recording 2817 reports of serious crimes and 2012, 3201 reports.

Blanhum indicated that by the end of 2015 there should be a 1% decrease in crimes.

“All these headlines that we are bombarded with that crime is spiraling out of control is nothing short of absurd,” he stated.

He affirmed that all is not lost and Guyana is not in the dark days.

“Based on these figures the only logical conclusion is that crime is not spiraling out of control and we are not in those dark days,” the Crime Chief stated.
