Guyana eyes improved Civil Aviation rating

The newly-elected Guyana government on Tuesday announced plans to beef up the civil aviation sector as part of plans for the country to once again be rated Category One.

“Government will spare no effort in ensuring that Guyana attains Catgeory One in the shortest possible time,”  Junior Minister of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson told the National Assembly during debate on the 2015 National Budget

She noted that the United States Federal Aviation Administration determines whether another country’s oversight system complies with the standards laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Without a Category One rating, which Guyana lost almost 20 years ago, airlines registered here would not be allowed to fly to and from the United States.

Against the background of Guyana being rated the lowest- 44 percent- in South America for the implementation of aviation standards during the past eight years, Ferguson said qualified and competent technical staff would be recruited. They include flight operations and air worthiness inspectors.

 The Junior Public Infrastructure Minister said the Civil Aviation legislation and regulations would be amended following consultations with industry stakeholders.
