(ST. LUCIA TIMES).-A visually impaired Guyanese cricketer, here for a blind cricket tournament, died on Friday, July 31 during a beach outing, organizers of the tournament have confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as 28-year old Gordon Sandiford, who was a member of the Guyana team.
An official of the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association (SLBWA), told the Times that when rain yesterday made play impossible, some of the cricketers went on various outings.
The SLBWA official disclosed that Sandiford was at a beach in the north of the island and appeared to encounter difficulty in the water, whereupon he was taken back to shore and CPR was administered.
However the Guyanese national, who is reported to have been frothing at the mouth and nose, passed away while on his way to hospital via ambulance.
Cricketers and officials who are here for the tournament have expressed shock at the death, describing Sanndiford as a very outgoing individual.
They attended a debriefing session today conducted by Clinical Psychologist, Doctor Franklin Bray.
