National Coordinator of Guyana’s Border Patrol Unit, Daniel Seeram was Monday sentenced to 13 months imprisonment but the jail term would only take effect if he is convicted for another offence and punished by a custodial sentence.
He was convicted on October 2, 2026 for assaulting his ex-wife causing her actual bodily harm. He was remanded to prison until November 2 for sentencing. One month was deducted for time served.
Magistrate Abigail Gibbs handed down the sentence after considering several reports. She said the court “finds persuasive reasoning” in a 2013 precedent. She said based on his character and national service, he was better off undergoing community rehabilitation than in the prison system.
She said if he is convicted for another offence punishable by a custodial sentence, that court could order that he serve the 13 month jail term for this matter.
He is former chairman for Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) and a former officer of the Guyana Defence Force.
