Texila American University (TAU) has added artificial intelligence (AI) and a laboratory of simulator mannequins to teach students to become medical doctors, Dean of the institution Dr Dheeraj Bansal said Friday.
Addressing a new batch of students at their white coat ceremony, marking the start of their journey to become physicians, he said students would not only be taught in physical classrooms but they would have the benefit of an AI-based cyber patient portal.
He explained that students could ask patient history questions and an AI person would interact about examinations, investigations and findings.
“It will also give you feedback like which investigations you should have ordered and which investigations you shouldn’t have ordered or which exam that you should have conducted,” Dr Bansal said.
The school has also invested in acquiring simulator mannequins to teach students various aspects of medicine by simulating bodily functions including the heart, eyes and lungs.
The TAU dean also said during their studies in Guyana, the students, who are from here, Africa, Caribbean, India and North America, would be engaged in community activities.
“It’s not all about sitting in the classroom and studying. We also take you to the communities in distant parts of Guyana where we organise health camps,” he said.
Dr Bansal appealed to students to be patient listeners, respectful and professional on and off campus.
He said they must be humanitarians and practice the qualities of ethics, professionalism and empathy.
“Treat all your patients with care, with empathy and do your best to take the suffering away,” he said.
