The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) said it seized a quantity of uncustomed alcohol from a property owned by Mr Ernesto Choo that was rented to one of three arrested persons.
Mr Choo has since instructed his lawyer to take legal action against defamatory statements made by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed on Facebook.
CANU made it clear that Mr Choo, who was a member of the Police Service Commission (PSC), was not the subject of the operation and that no narcotics were seized from the house located at Windsor Estates, East Bank Demerara. “One of the persons arrested stated that he rents the property from Mr. Ernesto Choo. Mr. Ernesto Choo was not the subject in this operation, and not the subject of any investigations of the unit,” CANU said in a statement.
CANU said its seizure of the quantity of uncustomed alcohol was part of a contraband operation at the property.
“During the operation, three persons were arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters for further questioning,” CANU said. Those arrested, according to a source, are two Chinese and one Spanish-speaking national.
Demerara Waves Online News was told by a well-placed source that 30 cases of Johnny Walker were seized from the property.
Meanwhile, Mr Choo’s lawyer, Sase Gunraj said his client rented the property for more than three years and “is not in possession or control thereof.”
The lawyer slammed a Facebook post earlier Saturday by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed as “false, malicious and defamatory, and have the effect of seriously impugning our client’s reputation.”
