Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed on Friday said Meta had deactivated the Team Mohameds Facebook page after receiving complaints of trademark violation, but the global social media giant early Friday reactivated the page after his lawyers in the United States made a formal request.
“We took a legal team that specialises with Facebook so they wrote Meta, asking to reinstate the page, claiming that the page is authentic and there are no trademark issues,” he told Demerara Waves Online News. He said there was no basis for the trademark claim because his were the only Team Mohameds and We Invest in Nationhood in Guyana.
Though the Team Mohameds page, which has more than 500,000 followers, is now up, he said no one could post, like or share yet.
Mr Mohamed said the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) page was taken down for the same reason and was yet to be reactivated.
Though he had earlier accused government of deleting the Facebook page after his mobile phones were seized by police at the Leonora police station on September 3, Mr Mohamed on Friday maintained that the government was behind the trademark violation complaints to Meta about both Facebook pages. He said a confidential source informed him that the ruling party was spending millions of dollars in generating bot comments on certain pages and creating fake email addresses that were being used to lodge complaints to Meta.
“I am maintaining that the PPP government is fully responsible for the closure of these accounts,” he said.
He related that his lawyer informed Meta that the Team Mohameds account was “suspended” on September 4 “for violating terms of service for trademark infringement, a false claim that Mr Mohamed found shocking and deeply unsettling.” According to the lawyer’s letter, Mr Mohamed offered to waive all legal claims if the account was reinstated by September 24.
Mr Mohamed said Meta did not reply but he early Friday morning realised that the account was reactivated.
