Police officer implicates Azruddin Mohamed in alleged killings but admits no charge was laid

The Head of the Guyana Police Force’s special branch department, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine on Tuesday implicated billionaire city businessman Azruddin Mohamed in six alleged “execution-style” killings, causing him to pose a national security threat.

Speaking from the witness box during a hearing into the United States’ (US) request for the extradition of the younger Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, to face trial in Florida for alleged financial crimes, Mr Narine said they included the killing of the three persons on a boat.

He told the court during cross examination by defence lawyer Siand Dhurjon that it was “my information” that Mr Mohamed, now Guyana’s Opposition Leader, was involved in the alleged homicides. Mr Narine said he was not present when those killings occurred, but he was certain that the businessman committed the offences based on information that was “garnered from sources.”

Asked by Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman to justify his line of questioning. Mr Dhurjon said, “The path in which we are going with this is to demonstrate to your worship that there is a poison mine here, clearly contained within Mr Prem Narine, especially towards the Mohameds. It’s almost like an obsession. They they are like the boogeyman that that he sees in the night when he closes his eyes.”

Mr Narine said he started learning of that information around 2011 when the first alleged killing occurred while he was in Criminal Investigations Department and served as the divisional detective officer at the Diamond Police Station. Similarly, he said he was still in the CID during the second killing in 2020 or 2021.

The Head of the Special Branch said certain “control officers” or “responsible persons”  who he reported to and were part of the information channel or nerve centre were aware of that information.  He said he could not recall specifically “somebody superior to me” who were told that information.

The Attorney-at-Law, in response to the Chief Magistrate, said he was not leading prejudicial evidence against Mr Mohamed.

Mr Narine conceded that he did not cause Mr Mohamed to be arrested during a probe into those alleged crimes.  However, he said he caused police statements to be taken implicating his client in those three murders. “Several statements were taken. I can’t recall now the contents of those statement,” Mr Narine said.

The police officer acknowledged that as far as he was aware “not a single charge” or finding of wrong-doing by any court of law for the alleged murders, tortures, execution-style killing, beating of employees or bribery.

In addition to his belief that Mr Mohamed was guilty of those offences that motivated him to view him as a threat to national security, Mr Narine said that, “that and the fact that my information is supported.”
