A real estate agent was burnt badly early Sunday morning after he went to investigate what seemed to have been the smell of gas, the Guyana Police Force said.
The 56-year old man, Troy Alleyne, sustained severe burns. Police said his condition was listed as “critical” and he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The Guyana Police Force said the incident occurred at about 2:32 AM at Pineapple Street and Front Road, East Ruimveldt.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that Alleyne and his family were at home when his wife woke up and noticed the smell of what appeared to be gas. She alerted him and he went into the yard to make checks on the premises, where a 100-pound gas cylinder was installed.
About two minutes later, a loud explosion was heard, followed by screams. The eastern side of the building reportedly collapsed and caught fire,” police said in a statement.
Fire fighters extinguished the blaze.
Police said they later processed the scene. They said as part of the ongoing investigations, they would view video recordings from Closed Circuit Television cameras in the areas.
