A labourer of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara was killed in an accident late on Sunday afternoon when the car he was driving was allegedly hit by a car driven by a police sergeant, the Guyana Police Force said on Sunday.
The driver of PAB 1013, 27-year-old Keshon Arthur of Hand-en-Veldt, Mahaica, was pronounced dead on arrival and the police sergeant of Belmont, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara was hospitalised.
The Guyana Police Force said the lawman suffered from a broken right leg and lacerations about his face and body. His condition was listed as stable.
Police said the accident occurred at 5:45 a.m. on the Enmore Public Road, East Coast Demerara where the 33-year old sergeant was proceeding west along the southern driving lane when motorcar PAB 1013, which was proceeding east, allegedly overtook several vehicles and ended up on the southern driving lane.
Police said that reportedly caused the policeman, who was driving motorcar PAM 3828, to pull further to the southern side of the road in an effort to avoid a collision.
However, investigators were told despite his efforts, motorcar PAB 1013 collided with the right-side front of his vehicle.
As a result of the collision, both drivers received injuries about their bodies and were assisted by public-spirited citizens and Emergency Medical Technicians, who removed them from their vehicles and escorted them to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where they were seen and examined by a doctor on duty.
