Widespread rainfall for the next six days – forecasters

Weather forecasters at the Ministry of Agriculture’s Hydrometeorological Service on Monday predicted six days of “widespread rainfall” with the potential for flooding for the next six days – March 23 to 28.

Expected are widespread rainfall, at times heavy, thunderstorms, particularly during the morning into early afternoon periods, and reduced visibility during intense showers.

The potential impacts include localised flooding, especially in flood-prone and low-lying areas, water accumulation on roadways leading to hazardous driving conditions, disruptions to outdoor activities, lightning and gusty winds associated with thunderstorms.

“The Hydrometeorological Service advises that unstable weather conditions are expected to affect Guyana over the next six days (March 23–28, 2026), resulting in widespread rainfall with the potential for flooding and, in some cases, exacerbating existing flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas,” states a special information bulletin.

The rainfall and flood warning was issued, even as many parts of Guyana’s coastal regions experienced heavy to moderate rainfall during most of Monday.

Forecasters say current weather conditions are being influenced by strong low-level convergence, supported by moisture transport from the trade winds. This is further enhanced by upper-level divergence, creating a highly unstable atmospheric environment.

“These combined factors are contributing to increased cloudiness, frequent showers, periods of moderate to heavy rainfall, and isolated to scattered thunderstorms,” Hydrometeorological Service said.

The Special Information Bulletin also states in its forecast that “these unsettled conditions are expected to persist throughout the week, as forecast models indicate that the current atmospheric pattern will remain in place.”
