Watchman shot dead, outboard engines stolen

Last Updated on Saturday, 7 March 2026, 18:15 by Writer

A watchman, Vishal Miguel, 24, was shot dead and his body was seen floating in the Essequibo River, shortly after the owner of a shipping establishment at Unity, Parika discovered that several outboard engines were missing, police said Saturday.

Investigators were informed that about 8 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4 the proprietor of the establishment visited the location and discovered that several outboard engines were missing from boats docked in the river. “This prompted a search in the area, during which a body was later observed floating in the Essequibo River,” the Guyana Police Force said in a statement.

Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh conducted a postmortem on March 6 and found that Miguel died from a gunshot injury to the head.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that Miguel, who was employed as a night watchman at the shipping yard, was last seen on Monday, March 2 about 7 p.m. when he reportedly entered the yard to commence duties.
