Suriname police arrest trio with fuel allegedly smuggled from Guyana

Last Updated on Friday, 20 February 2026, 21:38 by Writer

The three men who were arrested allegedly with fuel smuggled from Guyana.

Surinamese police say they have arrested three men in connection with alleged smuggling of fuel from neighbouring Guyana.

“The color of the liquids matched the fuel typically smuggled in from Guyana,” the Suriname Police Corps said in a statement.

Police said the men were arrested on Wednesday on a road leading to South Drain.

Police said they found a significant amount of gasoline and diesel fuel in several jerrycans amounting to approximately 310 litres of gasoline and 690 litres of diesel fuel.

The three suspects were only identified by their initials and ages – KR (40), PN, also known as “Teno”, (38) and BP (48).

Police officers said they investigated after receiving a report that a pickup truck was transporting fuel, likely smuggled in from Guyana shortly before , via a so-called “Go Fast” boat.

Upon arrival, police said they found a truck with driver KR and two occupants, PN and BP.

The three were stopped, and upon inspection of the truck’s cargo bed, police found a significant amount of gasoline and diesel fuel in several jerrycans.

The law enforcement officers said they found that the fuel was transported by the driver and his helper KR from a storage room of a boat owner for PN.

Police said they suspected forgery because of allegedly contradictory statements by the suspects and invoices with suspected incorrect dates.

The trio was subsequently handcuffed and taken to the police station for arraignment. The pickup truck and the amount of fuel found were seized by the police in the interest of the investigation, police added.

After consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the three suspects have been remanded in custody pending the investigation.
